Why Nightingale Guidance Was Created
Nightingale Guidance was created from a deep desire to help older adults, families, and caregivers feel more informed, prepared, and supported as they navigate aging, care needs, and major life transitions.
Through years of working in senior living and supporting families during times of crisis, Dena Nightingale recognized a common pattern: many people are forced to make important decisions during stressful and emotional situations without fully understanding the options, resources, or plans that should already be in place.
One of the driving forces behind Nightingale Guidance is a strong belief in the importance of education and proactive planning. Many older adults and families are simply unaware of the steps they can take now to better prepare for the future — whether related to care needs, financial planning for long-term care, legal documentation, housing decisions, safety concerns, or identifying who will help make decisions if a crisis occurs.
Too often, conversations about aging, future care, and life transitions are delayed until an emergency happens. Families may suddenly find themselves trying to make decisions about healthcare, living arrangements, finances, or support services while overwhelmed by hospitalization, illness, injury, or cognitive decline.
Nightingale Guidance was created to help change that.
The mission of Nightingale Guidance is not only to help during times of crisis, but also to provide education, guidance, and resources before a crisis happens. By helping individuals and families better understand available options and prepare in advance, Dena hopes to reduce confusion, stress, conflict, and uncertainty when difficult situations arise.
Nightingale Guidance focuses on helping people understand topics such as:
-
Planning ahead for future care needs
-
Understanding senior living and care options
-
Resources that may help someone remain safe at home longer
-
Questions families should be discussing before a crisis occurs
-
The importance of legal and healthcare planning documents
-
Preparing financially for future support and care needs
-
Navigating downsizing, relocation, and other major life transitions
-
Connecting with trusted resources and support services
At its core, Nightingale Guidance exists to provide compassionate, personalized guidance centered around the individual — their goals, preferences, concerns, values, and quality of life. Every person and every family situation is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

About The Founder, Dena Nightingale
Dena Nightingale has dedicated much of her life and career to helping others through some of life’s most difficult, emotional, and important moments. Her professional path has always been centered around service, compassion, advocacy, and guidance.
Before entering senior living and real estate, Dena worked in an Oncology practice and served her community as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), EMS Lieutenant, and Fire Fighter. Those experiences strengthened her ability to remain calm during stressful situations, listen carefully, respond compassionately, and support individuals and families during times of uncertainty and crisis.
As her career evolved, Dena developed a strong appreciation for the importance of personalized support and meaningful human connection. She believes every person has a unique story, set of experiences, routines, preferences, and goals that deserve to be understood and respected. Her approach is centered around listening well, building trust, and helping people feel supported rather than overwhelmed during times of change.
Dena is a Certified Dementia Practitioner and successfully completed the Assisted Living Manager course. She also holds the Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®) designation, allowing her to provide additional guidance for older adults and families navigating housing transitions such as downsizing, relocating, or purchasing a home that better fits changing needs.
Through her years of experience in senior living, Dena has also developed a deep respect for the owners, managers, and caregivers who dedicate themselves to caring for older adults every day. She understands the many responsibilities they balance while striving to create safe, supportive, and meaningful environments for residents.
Dena is especially passionate about helping assisted living communities strengthen and build upon the quality care they already provide. She believes many care providers entered this field because of their enormous hearts and genuine desire to help others, and she values the important role both smaller residential assisted living homes and larger assisted living communities play in supporting older adults with different needs, personalities, and preferences.
Through Nightingale Guidance, Dena combines her background in emergency services, healthcare, and senior living to provide compassionate guidance, thoughtful support, and meaningful resources for older adults, families, caregivers, and senior living communities throughout Carroll, Frederick, Howard, and Montgomery Counties in Maryland.
Above all, Dena’s mission is to help people feel heard, supported, informed, and more confident as they navigate life’s important transitions.
